James Wyper was born in 1836 the son of Alexander Wyper & Elizabeth Finley, husband of Janet Mein. He had the distinction of being the first station-master of the branch railway at Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland serving forty-six years until retiring eight years before his death.
Mr. Wyper was also prominent and enthusiastic Freemason being a member for around 36 years and is mentioned in the early minutes dating from 1892 to 1912. He had the honour of occupying the chair and was also a member of the Provincial Grand Lodge, in which he also held office, and was a regular attender at all the meetings. During his long connection with the Lodge Union 244 he did not miss one St. John’s Day celebrationn except the last, and only the state of his health prevented him from attending.
