Robert was born in Stonehouse, son of Mrs Martha Russell 31 King street Stonehouse with brothers James, Thomas and William. Brother James was staying in Teralba Newcastle New South Wales Australia. Sister was Mary Weir 28 Lockhart street Lanarkshire.
Robert enlisted at Hamilton on 31-05-1915 whilst residing at in Stonehouse. Embarked from Southampton as part of the British Expeditionary Force on 08-01-1916.
Robert was killed in action on Saturday 1st July 1916 during an attack on La Boissell. At 7.35 am. No man’s land was crossed with few casualties. When they got to the German wire it was a different story as machine guns cut the battalion to pieces although some of the 16th battalion are said to have reached Contalmaison. By the end of the day casualties were heavy. Robert was 19 years of age and was part of 101st brigade 34th division .Private Russell has no known grave and is commemorated on –Thiepval memorial, Somme, France. Pier and face 6d and 7d.
